     SWINE-DIVISIONS 6, 7, 7A
    Superintendent:
    Ted Mosher
    Judging Time: 8:00 a.m., Thursday
The Swine classes for the Hardin County Fair include Derby Performance Live classes, Derby Performance Ultrasound Carcass classes, Market classes, Market Carcass classes, and Showmanship classes. Each of these divisions has a section before the classes that gives specific rules for that section.

The General Swine Rules for Divisions 6, 7, and 7A lists rules for all of the county swine classes, some health rules, and some State Fair rules for 4-H'ers and FFA youth.

    General Rules for Divisions, 6, 7, 7A

    1.  Each Swine Exhibitor may bring a maximum of six pigs to the Hardin County Fair. Entries are open to swine that have been enrolled on a Swine Identification Form by May 15 and Derby Swine that were weighed in at the Hardin County swine weigh-in date.
    2. One of these six  pigs must be a Derby Performance Pig. If a Derby Performance Pig is not shown, a 4-H or FFA exhibitor is not eligible to show any pigs at the fair. (The Swine Committee recommends that youth weigh in more than one Derby Performance Pig at the weigh-in in the spring to insure that they will have a Derby Performance Pig for show.)
    3. The five remaining pigs shown may be shown as additional Derby Performance Pigs or Market pigs. (A member could choose to show all six pigs as Derby Performance Pigs.)
    4. All pigs may be gilts or barrows in any combination.
    5. Pigs may be purebred, crossbred, or grade in any combination that were farrowed on or after January 1, of the current year.
    6. All pigs must be notched in both ears using the Universal Ear Notching System. (Sometimes called the National Ear Notching System.)
    7. No fresh ear notches will be permitted. The decision regarding fresh ear notches will be the swine committees. Their decision is final.
    8. All pigs nominated for the swine project must be identified on a Swine Identification Form (4-H-106-F). This form is due in the Hardin County Extension Office by May 15th each year.
    9. Derby Performance Pigs are weighed and tattooed in early spring. The information for these pigs must be recorded on the Swine Identification Form at the weigh site and the weigher must sign the form.
    10. Additional non-weighed pigs (market) may be added to the form for County Fair. These additions are due by May 15th. These pigs are eligible to be shown only in County Fair Market classes.
    11. All pigs must be checked into their pens by
    9 p.m. on Tuesday.
    12. All pigs will be weighed at
7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. There will be no re-weighing of pigs.
    13. Each pig will receive a unique tattoo and a paint number at weigh-in at the fair. These numbers will identify pigs during the shows and during the marketing process.
    14. There are no restrictions on ending weight for pigs however the target weight of marketable pigs is 260 pounds. Pigs with great variance on either side of this figure may be docked.
    15. All pigs brought to the fair grounds will go directly to market for slaughter. Pigs over or under the ideal market weight for marketable pigs will be the responsibility of the seller (exhibitor). One focus in the learning process of raising pigs is to learn to market pigs at the optimum weight and quality for the product desired by the packer and consumers. Exhibitors make this decision before pigs come to the county fair.
    16. Exhibitors must show their own pigs in the ring unless exhibitors have more than one pig in the same class. The pig must be exhibited by another eligible 4-H or FFA member.
    17. All pigs will become the property of the processor as soon as pigs are loaded on the truck.
    18. The Champion and Reserve Champion Performance Derby
Pigs, Champion and Reserve Champion Market Barrow, and the Champion and Reserve Champion Market Gilt will compete for the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Pigs.
    19. All exhibitors must be Food Safety & Quality Assurance (FSQA) certified to exhibit and sell pigs at the Hardin County Fair.
    20. Swine exhibitors must sign and present an owner's affidavit that the animals being exhibited did not originate for a quarantined herd and to the best of their knowledge; swine dysentery has not been in evidence in their herd for the past 12 months. No pseudorabies test is necessary because all swine are consigned and move direct to a slaughtering establishment from the fairgrounds.

DIVISION 6 - JUNIOR DERBY PERFORMANCE
Explanation:    The Derby Performance Pig Show focuses on the performance of market pigs during a test window. A beginning test weight is taken on each Derby Performance Pig in early spring. Pigs are weighed and tattooed. This information along with ear notches, sex, color markings and other information is collected on each pig. Each youth may weigh in a maximum of six pigs for the test.

At the County fair, pigs are weighed and an "on test rate of gain" is determined. The "on test rate of gain" is used in a formula with carcass information to determine a "lean value per day on test." Pigs are ranked according to lean value. The Derby Performance show at the fair has two aspects: the ultrasonic evaluation and placing (discussed above) and a live show placing. In the live show, pigs are placed in classes according to their beginning on test weight. Judging of the live show is done visually. Rate of gain information is used along with the visual placing. Only Derby Performance Pigs will be evaluated using both of these two methods of evaluation: ultrasonic and live showing.

Derby Performance Rules - See general swine rules for additional rules.
    1. Each youth nominating pigs in the Derby Performance program may weigh and tattoo a maximum of six pigs at the spring weigh-in. Pigs must be weighed by an official weigher. Entries are open to swine that have been enrolled on a Swine Identification Form by May 15.
    2. The recommended weight of Derby Performance pigs is between 45 and 75 pounds at weigh-in. There are no restrictions on ending weight for pigs.
    3. Information about these pigs must be recorded on a Swine Identification Form. Be sure to use a current form. Form is due in the Hardin County Extension office by May 15th each year.
    4. At the fair, pigs must be weighed and receive an ultrasound for carcass measurement.
5.A schedule of weighing order will be announced at fair.
    6. The Hardin County Pork Producers will pay the cost of the ultrasound for the first
Derby Performance pig.  The cost of additional pigs that receive an ultrasound will be paid by the exhibitor at the time of weigh-in. The cost per pig will be $9.00.
    7. Derby Performance data will be provided to each swine exhibitor as an educational tool to aid youth in understanding the dynamics of marketing a quality meat product.
    8. Live
Derby Performance classes will be divided by sex and weight.
    9. The first and second place winners in each class will compete for Champion and Reserve Champion Live Derby
    Performance Pig.

    3. All pigs must be weighed at the fairgrounds. They will be placed in classes divided by sex and weight.

They may choose pigs to show as market swine that were weighed in (nominated) as Performance Derby pigs in the spring as long as they show at least one Derby Performance pig in that show. Any pigs shown would be judged as any market pig-judged visually without the benefit of rate of gain information.
